Welcome to Styling After 50, a brand new blog about fashion and style for women over age fifty. It’s not every day that a book author launches a blog about style. So why the heck am I, a novelist and feature profile writer, doing just that? Good question, and I’ll answer it in a bit. But first . . .
I admit that a huge part of me feels like I’m about to jump backward off a ship and get swallowed in the deep, dark sea. Or like I’m about to throw myself off a cliff into the abyss. At my age, doing new things and making big life changes doesn’t come easy. But another part feels excited, thrilled even, to embark on a wild, new, crazy adventure as I plunge into . . .
Hey! Wait a minute. I’m getting far ahead of myself. This ain’t going to be all THAT far out.
It’s simply a blog about clothes, jewelry, and accessories or all things style for women over age fifty.
But back to the question. Why this topic? Why a blog about style and fashion? The answer is fairly simple, really. I’ve always loved the glam and glitter. In college, I came very close to majoring in fashion and design. I spent just about every dime I earned during the summer months buying clothes and shoes.
One of my favorite outfits was a stark white, all-weather coat with fur trim on the collar and the edges of the sleeves. When I wore it with my fly, white leather lace-up boots, girl, you could not tell me a thing. I also had these flared print slacks that I loved to wear.
Years later, I was still styling but my taste had evolved (thankfully!). And by the time I started touring around the country as an author, I was wearing designer suits with designer heels.
Then along came marriage and kids, a rich but very different lifestyle. Suddenly fashion was no longer front and center. I was no slouch, but if I wore a designer it was more likely to be a pair of Not Your Daughter’s jeans with some cute flats. (I’ve never been much into tennis shoes except when working out.)
Fast forward to the present. The children are grown and more independent, and I finally get to think about myself after years of mainly looking after others. And when I glanced down, it felt like I had forgotten all about the glam and glitter.
I want to get that back. The old me, or at least a new version of the old me, who loved all things fashion. Only this time with a twist that reflects my current reality as a woman who is no longer twenty-five or thirty-five or even forty-five.
So in this blog, instead of the usual twenty- and thirty-somethings looking all shiny and new, we’re going to keep it real. We’re going to feature mature folks age fifty and older. We’ll get into gray hair, wrinkles, and full-figured body sizes. We’ll cover tips on shoes, clothes, jewelry, and cosmetics–all for grown-ups over age fifty.
